Goucher College Art Galleries presents Fables, Foibles and Fallacies: An Interactive Exhibition of the Senses, an immersive exhibition by mixed-media artist Randi Reiss-McCormack that brings together painting, sculpture, textiles, sound, and interactive technology. Extending painting beyond the wall, Reiss-McCormack transforms the gallery into a tactile, responsive environment in which visitors become active participants in the work.

 

Rooted in memory, intuition, and collective craft traditions, Reiss-McCormack’s practice explores the relationships between material, perception, and personal and shared narratives. The exhibition features large-scale mixed-media paintings and sculpture alongside two immersive installations that invite audiences to experience the work through touch, movement, and sound.

 

At the center of the exhibition is Interlude for a Stroll, an environment of oversized fiber-tufted forms intertwined with crochet, beads, and tactile sculptural elements. A 3D camera senses visitors’ movement through the installation, translating their collective presence through a generative sound system into an evolving composition of sounds drawn from the living and mechanical worlds. As audiences move through the space, they continually reshape its sensory environment.

A second installation, Magical Thinking, explores personal and collective myth through over-life-size textile forms and an interactive, touchable prayer wheel. Throughout the exhibition, hand-sized textile spheres encourage tactile exploration, while braille-inscribed beads incorporate tactile language directly into the artwork.

 

Developed in collaboration with a sound engineer and accessibility consultant, Fables, Foibles and Fallacies approaches accessibility not as an addition to the finished exhibition, but as a generative part of Reiss-McCormack’s artistic process. By designing for varied sensory experiences, she expands the possibilities of her materials and challenges the conventional distance between artwork and audience.

 

The result is an exhibition in which no two encounters are quite the same. Visitors bring their own movement, touch, perception, and presence to the work, helping shape an environment that is continually changing. Blurring the boundaries between painting, craft, installation, and technology, Fables, Foibles and Fallacies asks what becomes possible when experiencing art becomes a reciprocal exchange.

 

About the Artist

Randi Reiss-McCormack is a printmaker and mixed-media artist whose practice brings together painting, textiles, sculpture, and craft-based processes. Working through memory and intuition, she creates layered forms and environments that explore personal and collective narratives, material experimentation, and the possibilities of sensory engagement. Her recent work expands painting into immersive and participatory spaces, incorporating sound, technology, touch, and accessibility as integral components of the artistic experience.
